The Mixed Gender Unit
“Someone told me recently, ‘Don’t worry. They’re just practicing putting on makeup for their wedding day.‘ I don’t know who will marry them. She’ll tell the kids battlefield stories at night.”
— Rabbi Yigal Levinstei at the the religious army preparatory academy in the West Bank, March 2017.
Those voices against combining female soldiers in the Israeli army got a strong counter reaction in the recruitment center located in the center of Israel, where a thousand girls, an all-times record, volunteered during August 2018 to serve in combat positions.
This project documents a 24 hours practice of the mixed gender combat unit in a military site dedicated to urban warfare in southern Israel during that month.
